Stars-Coyotes: Postgame quotes

Here are some postgame quotes following the Dallas Stars’ 2-0 loss at Phoenix Saturday night.

Stars coach Glen Gulutzan on the penalty problems in the game

“Fourteen minutes in penalties to 40 seconds in power play time, so that is going to hurt you, I think, more times than not.”

“For the most part (we’re taking penalties that are penalties), but the first two weren’t. The first was an embellished stick that never caught anybody in the face that was sold pretty good. The other one a guy was falling down and it looked like we hooked him. The other ones are penalties.”

“We’re going to pay for it now. We paid for it tonight. We’ve had internal discussions about too many penalties, and we’ll pay for it when we get to practice.”

Gulutzan on the play of Richard Bachman

“He gave us a chance to win, gave us a chance to win. Our big guys need to step up, too. You can’t win with a goose egg. No matter how you slice it, you can’t win. We needed some guys to step up and bury some pucks and create some offense. We didn’t. This is a team loss.”

Gulutzan on the team’s offensive struggles on the road

“I don’t think we threw enough pucks randomly at the net and get bodies there. We get a little too cute. It wasn’t until later until we started to do that. When you’re on your heels a quarter of the game, that’s what happens, no momentum.”

Stars defenseman Trevor Daley

“It’s not just tonight; it’s been like a theme around here – killing a lot of penalties doesn’t work. Quite frankly, we’re killing too many. You can’t win when the other top two lines are getting all the power play time. … We’ve got to get it out quickly. It’s killing us and we’re losing games because of it. It’s unfortunate, because five-on-five I think we’re a pretty good team.”

Stars forward Vernon Fiddler on the penalties

“It’s the volume of them. I think our PK’ers are doing a great job, but our top guys are sitting on the bench and they can’t get things offensively going. Their legs are tired when they get going because they’ve been sitting there so long. It’s gone on last year, it’s gone on the beginning of this year, and it’s something that we have to figure out right away.”

Stars goaltender Richard Bachman

“For me personally, it was nice to get back in the net. It’s been a week or so, week-and-a-half. It was just nice to see some shots and some game action. First game in the NHL, it was nice to get a lot of shots there.”

Phoenix coach Dave Tippett

“We’ve had parts of this in our last three or four games, but after the first period a pretty complete game. Territorially we did a lot of good things. As it turned out, in the first period we made a few mistakes and gave them a few chances and in hindsight I think it was good for Smitty (goaltender Mike Smith).  He had to make a couple of good saves and he got right in the game. It looked more like Smitty there. After the first period, I thought our team was very strong.”

Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith

“My game hasn’t gone the way I’ve liked it to so far this season, but tonight was a better indication of where my game needs to be. It obviously wasn’t really busy, but it was nice to gain some confidence.”
